Clamp Meter and Clamp-On Ammeter Calibration

Keep clamp meters and clamp-on ammeters ready for electrical testing with accredited calibration, traceable results, and current measurement checks

What Is a Clamp Meter?

Clamp Meter and Clamp-On Ammeter Calibration

A clamp meter, also called a clamp-on ammeter or clamp-on meter, is an electrical test instrument used to measure current by sensing the magnetic field around a conductor. Because the clamp surrounds the conductor, many current measurements can be made without disconnecting the circuit or placing the instrument directly in series with the load.

Clamp meters may measure AC current, DC current, or both, depending on the instrument design. Many models also include digital multimeter functions such as voltage, resistance, continuity, frequency, capacitance, and temperature measurement.

Clamp meters are commonly used in electrical maintenance, manufacturing, utilities, field service, HVAC, industrial troubleshooting, and other applications where current measurements need to be made quickly and safely. Because clamp meter readings can support troubleshooting, equipment verification, process monitoring, and maintenance decisions, regular calibration helps confirm measurement performance and provides traceable calibration results.

Common Clamp Meter Functions

SIMCO supports calibration for clamp meters and clamp-on ammeters with common measurement functions, including:

  • AC current measurement
  • DC current measurement, where supported
  • AC and DC voltage measurement
  • Resistance measurement
  • Continuity testing
  • Frequency measurement
  • Capacitance measurement, where supported
  • Temperature measurement, where supported
  • Inrush or peak current measurement, where supported
  • Other digital multimeter functions, when included with the instrument

Clamp Meter Calibration Capabilities

SIMCO provides clamp meter calibration services designed to evaluate measurement performance, identify drift, and support traceable documentation for quality and compliance programs.

Our clamp meter calibration services may include:

  • Inspection of instrument condition, clamp jaws, display, controls, inputs, and accessories
  • Verification of AC current measurement across supported ranges
  • Verification of DC current measurement, where applicable
  • Verification of voltage, resistance, frequency, capacitance, and other supported functions
  • Calibration using appropriate electrical reference standards and documented procedures
  • Adjustment, when supported by the instrument and service scope
  • As-found and as-left results, when required
  • Calibration certificates with test points, tolerances, measurement uncertainties, and traceable documentation

Why Clamp Meter Calibration Matters

Clamp meters can experience changes in measurement performance due to frequent use, mechanical wear of the clamp mechanism, contamination of the jaw surfaces, electrical overload, temperature changes, component aging, or normal wear.

Because the measurement depends on the instrument sensing the magnetic field around a conductor, the condition and alignment of the clamp jaws can also affect measurement performance. Small changes may not be obvious during normal use but can influence troubleshooting, maintenance, verification, and quality decisions.

Calibration helps support:

  • Measurement performance: Evaluates current and other electrical measurement functions against applicable requirements.
  • Compliance and audit readiness: Provides traceable documentation for quality systems, customer requirements, and regulated environments.
  • Risk reduction: Helps reduce incorrect current readings that can contribute to troubleshooting errors, unnecessary maintenance, incorrect process decisions, or missed electrical problems.
  • Operational confidence: Supports consistent electrical measurements across maintenance, engineering, production, utilities, and field service applications.
