Temperature and Thermometer Calibration Services

Why Temperature Calibration Matters

Temperature measurement and control devices, instruments such as thermometers, thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, and temperature loggers, are subject to drift over time due to environmental stresses, aging, contamination, or mechanical stress.

Errors in temperature measurement can have large downstream effects in processes where temperature control is critical (e.g. pharmaceuticals, biotech, semiconductor manufacturing, food & beverage, climate chambers).

Having your temperature measuring devices calibrated regularly ensures:

  • Traceability to national and international standards (e.g. NIST / SI)
  • Documented “as found / as left” results
  • Measurement uncertainty assessments
  • Compliance with regulatory and quality standards (ISO, FDA, GMP, etc.)
  • Confidence in product quality, safety, and process consistency

How Often Should You Calibrate?

Typical calibration intervals across many organizations are 6 or 12 months, depending on:

  • The criticality of the measurement
  • Instrument usage frequency
  • Environmental stressors (humidity, vibration, contamination)
  • Manufacturer’s recommendation
  • Internal quality program / audit requirements

You may also perform calibration after events such as physical shock, repair, extreme temperature exposure, or suspicion of drift.

Our Temperature Calibration Process

Below is a high-level overview of how we conduct thermometer / temperature calibrations:

  1. Stabilization & Warm-upThe instrument under test is allowed to stabilize under controlled lab conditions to minimize thermal gradients.
  2. Reference Standards & Traceability - We use precision temperature reference standards, such as fixed-point cells, platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs), calibration baths, dry-wells, or temperature comparison standards, whose uncertainties are known and traceable to national or international standards.
  3. Test Points / Span Checks - We apply multiple temperature set points (e.g. low, mid, high) across the instrument’s operating or customer specified range to verify linearity, offset, and span.
  4. Comparison & Adjustment - At each test point, the instrument’s reading is compared to the reference standard. If deviation is detected and adjustment is possible and authorized by the customer, the instrument is adjusted to align with the standard (within allowable tolerance).
  5. Uncertainty & Decision Rule Measurement uncertainty is calculated and included. We apply either a simple decision rule (result within calibration limits) or a guard-banded / TUR-based decision rule (which accounts for uncertainty and minimizes false acceptance).
  6. As-Found / As-Left Data & Reporting - We provide full calibration reports showing “as found” readings, “as left” readings (if adjusted), tolerances, measurement uncertainty, test equipment used, serial numbers, and dates.
  7. Certificate & Traceability - A calibration certificate is issued, showing traceability, environmental conditions, and supporting data for audit and compliance records.

What We Calibrate

We offer calibration services for a wide range of temperature & thermal measurement devices, such as:

  • Thermocouples (Type J, K, T, R, S, etc.)
  • Thermometers (Liquid in glass, Bi-metallic, Digital)
  • RTDs (100 Ω, 1 kΩ, etc.)
  • Thermistors
  • Infrared (IR) thermometers, pyrometers
  • Temperature data loggers / recorders
  • Precision temperature baths / dry-wells
  • Environmental chambers / climate chambers
  • Temperature sensors / probes

If you have a temperature instrument not listed here, contact us, we may still be able to calibrate it.

Temperature Calibration FAQs

How often should I calibrate my temperature instruments?
A 12-month interval is typical. Instruments in high-use or critical applications may require more frequent calibration. Some applications or regulations may require specific intervals, such as requirements within SAE AMS 2750.

What standards does SIMCO follow?
All calibrations are performed under the umbrella of an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited quality system or in compliance with ANSI/NCSL Z540.1 with traceability to SI units through NIST or other national metrology institutes.

Do you offer on-site calibration?
Yes. SIMCO provides both in-lab and on-site temperature calibration to reduce downtime while maintaining full compliance and quality documentation.

What does my calibration certificate include?
Each certificate documents as-found/as-left readings, tolerances, uncertainties, environmental conditions, and reference standards used.
